A Look at Serbia's Ongoing Tryst with Gender Equality

Europe and especially the European Union has often been very vociferous about gender equality. But in 2016, Serbia became the first European nation outside of the EU to launch a Gender Equality Index.

In the inaugural year, the country scored 52.4 points. Two years on the score increased to 55.8 in 2018, and in 2021 it stood at 58.0. although the progress was slow yet it has been an ongoing progress with its needle pointed in the right direction.

Serbia’s business world is majority male yet women leaders occupied 39.5 percent senior and middle management positions in 2022.

But digging deeper, statistics unearthed some concerning figures. A recent study by UN Women revealed the existing gender inequalities in Serbian society. Gender pay gap has been a significant challenge with men in Serbia earning 14.4 per cent more than women on average.

Undoubtedly, a lot of ground remains to be covered but the country is steadily moving towards a more equitable and just society where all genders are treated the same.

Women leaders in Serbian companies hold significant positions and have broken the glass celeiving in various industries.
