In an exclusive interaction with The Global Women Leader, Abril Olmos enlightens us more about her professional journey and distinctive role at PEPSICO.

Take us through the formative years of your life. What were some of the key early influences in life?

My life changed when my mom passed away. I was only 16 years old and learned from that age that everything could change in a moment and that times are mostly uncertain. My support system became crucial for survival, and I adapted to the new reality with courage. Focused on my little brother's well-being, I dedicated myself to professional growth for our future. This journey shaped me into a resilient, strong, and dedicated individual.

"I value the opportunity to develop my innovation capabilities, which are essential for supporting organizational transformations & thriving in challenging times "

I also discovered that living through service and contribution gives life purpose. Inspired by role models in my tribe and family, I learned to embrace vulnerability, turn weaknesses into strengths, and embrace my gifts to impact my environment positively. Great things happen when we commit to sharing who we are and putting our love and passions into practice.

What role did your Alma Mater University of Cambridge UK play in shaping you as a professional and business leader?

I'm a continuous learner, and I value the opportunity to develop my innovation capabilities, which are essential for supporting organizational transformations and thriving in challenging times.  Change is a constant, and understanding the environment and the ecosystem is crucial to lead the change.  The Digital Transformation Strategies Program strengthened my strategic vision, enabling me to recognize and adapt to disruptions and build resilience to make the best of difficult situations. With the right mindset, you will see the learning opportunities beyond the façade and make difficult and complex decisions to bring value to you and the organization.

Throw some light on the prior industry experience. What are your key areas of expertise as a business leader?

I have a diverse career path as I was able to lead from different fronts and roles within Finance.  I have experience in Financial Planning, Treasury, Control, Corporate Audit, Technology Implementation, Automation and Digitization, Shared Services, and Strategy and Transformation.

Beyond technical expertise, I've come to understand the essence of authentic leadership as the bedrock of a fulfilling and genuine career. I firmly believe in owning our decisions to shape a prosperous future while empowering others to pursue their goals. As a sensitive leader with deep care for others, I remain grounded in my commitment to serving others and recognizing people's inherent value and equality.

Introduce us to PEPSICO. Tell us about the various responsibilities you shoulder as the Control & Process Transformation Director for the company.

PEPSICO is a great organization with incredible brands, firm values I feel connected to, and a strong commitment to our communities and environment.  In my 12+ tenure years in the organization, I always find a space to be me, to bring my gifts and strengths to work, and to voice my opinion fearlessly. I influence mindsets, embrace change, and drive transformation. As a leader, I actively contribute to capability building, mentoring, and coaching mainly women talents to bridge the gender gap. I embrace the responsibility of being a role model for future generations, fostering a safe and inclusive workplace where everyone feels valued for their contributions. Additionally, I collaborate to reinforce the organization's control consciousness, ensuring we do the right things the right way while finding ways to bring significant efficiencies to our processes and controls.

In your opinion, what have been the biggest `wins' that you have achieved so far in your professional journey? Most of my growth opportunities came from taking risks in roles that were unknown to me; those helped me learn, grow, and expand my ability to pivot, flex, and adapt. My value-add is sitting at the table and inspiring others to do the same.  Since my first job, I realized that I had something to say.  Even when the environment was challenging, I found a way to influence others to achieve the objectives while challenging the status quo to redefine and transform the ways of working to improve the results.

A significant win was leaving PEPSICO in 2016 to embark on a personal journey of self-discovery, living among diverse cultures. This courageous step redefined my purpose and empowered me to shape my desired future.

Now I'm back in the corporate world with a strong belief that I can change my world by embracing my true self.
