Gone are the days when the image of a doctor was solely a man in a white coat. Women are shattering stereotypes and leading the charge at every level, from providing compassionate care to pioneering groundbreaking research and even building healthcare businesses from scratch. Their unique approach, empathy, meticulous attention to detail, and focus on preventative care, are revolutionizing how we approach patient well-being. Dr Nesrin El Khatib is one such personality who is paving the way for a healthier future. A dedicated pediatrician by day, she also holds the reins as CEO of Elite Medical Center. Her story exemplifies the multifaceted competency of women's leadership in GGC’s healthcare landscape.
Looking back at your formative years, what were the early influences that truly shaped you into the exceptional leader you are today?
I am lucky to have been born into a family that values education for women. Both my parents being teachers cultivated a strong work ethic and a thirst for learning in me. Moreover, there was always a strong pull towards helping others, even as a child. I remember being the one organizing little clinics during playtime. This desire to care for others naturally drove me towards the medical field. Pediatrics wasn't always the specific goal, but the motivation was the underprivileged children, the vulnerable ones battling illness, who truly require our support. Recognizing the gift we have, the ability to make a difference in the lives of the weak and the sick fuels my passion every single day.
Indeed, it's been a long and fulfilling journey. Let me be clear, it wasn't always easy, and there have been constant challenges too. But that's precisely what makes the journey so meaningful. There's always more to learn, and more ways to improve. But the core purpose remains to leverage my knowledge and experience to serve those who need it most.
Elaborate on your industry experience that you feel is unique to yourself.
It's been a privilege to serve the medical community for a quarter-century now. I consider myself fortunate to have gained diverse exposure. My early training provided me with a strong foundation in Western medicine, its cutting-edge technology, and more. However, my journey then led me to a vital aspect often underplayed in the West – personal connection. Building rapport with patients and genuine care within the medical team, these elements became equally important to me.
This unique blend of experiences has undoubtedly shaped my approach to healthcare. It's about striking a delicate balance of the best of both worlds. This ability to seamlessly integrate the contrasting approaches has proven invaluable to me, both as a doctor and as a leader.
"Dr nesrin embodies the perfect blend of clinical expertise & astute business acumen, making her a true trailblazer in healthcare"
What challenges have you faced in business recently, particularly concerning healthcare? Also, what milestones or turning points do you consider as the biggest wins?
The COVID-19 pandemic presented a striking set of challenges. Our top priority was ensuring the safety of our patients and staff while still delivering essential healthcare services. We had to adapt quickly to telehealth consultations and other innovative solutions to maintain continuity of care.
Speaking of milestones, graduating from medical school, and specializing in pediatrics is an achievement I believe. However, coming to Qatar and starting over presented a fresh challenge, one that I'm proud to say I've overcome. The most rewarding moments stem from the enduring connections with patients and the community. Witnessing their progress and being remembered for compassionate care shows the true essence of success in healthcare.
What is your success mantra for growth?
My mantra is continuous learning and making a positive impact. Just last year, I completed a program on safety, quality, informatics, and leadership at Harvard Medical School. Staying updated in my field is crucial to providing the best possible care to my patients.
Remaining adaptable and embracing change, have been instrumental in navigating challenges and achieving success. I firmly believe in sharing knowledge. In fact, I frequently volunteer as a motivational speaker for medical students, sharing my experiences and encouraging them.
Who are some of your role models, and what advice would you give to aspiring women leaders?
I admire Sheikha Moza Nasser of Qatar. Her remarkable achievements as a leader in the Arab world are truly inspiring. In the business world, Steve Jobs stands out for his ability to adapt and persevere through challenges.
My advice to aspiring women leaders is to never be afraid of challenges, and grab every opportunity to learn and grow. Believe in yourself and your capabilities. Remember, perseverance is key. Success requires effort, and facing setbacks is a part of the journey.
