Give us a glimpse of your expansive professional journey so far. What have been some of the most crucial junctures throughout your professional journey?

My professional journey spans over two decades, delving deep into the realms of academia, international organizations, and consultancy roles. It all began during my PhD days, when I navigated the intricate world of environmental economics, culminating in a significant opportunity to contribute a chapter on South African environmental law to a University of London publication. This marked a pivotal point, propelling me into the nexus of environmental management and policy.

Subsequently, I ventured into diverse terrains - from delving into deforestation issues in Indonesia to advocating environmental policy integration, building climate resilience and supporting sustainable land use in Europe through EU-funded initiatives. Managing multi-million-euro programs aimed at climate change adaptation across Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific regions sharpened my strategic and managerial skills.

Each juncture has honed my expertise, from grassroots engagement to high-stakes policy formulation, fostering a holistic approach to global environmental challenges.

Throw some light on the key areas of expertise you have developed as a business leader and environmental consultant.

As a business leader and environmental consultant, my expertise has evolved across several key areas. Leadership, to me, is about more than just authority, it's about understanding the needs of both the team and the mission. This requires a blend of skills: clear decision-making, effective communication, and the ability to inspire and motivate others. In addition, listening to my team is crucial; it fosters engagement and ensures we're aligned in our goals, also, delegation is another vital skill; it distributes responsibilities efficiently and empowers team members. Ultimately, leading by example underscores credibility and unity, essential for navigating complex business and environmental landscapes with success.

Introduce us to Pendo SRL. Throw some light on the key responsibilities you shoulder as the company’s CEO.

Pendo SRL emerged from a journey that began in 2008, crystallizing into its current form in 2014. Our mission is clear: to address the multifaceted challenges of climate change, environment, and natural resource management. We operate at the intersection of policy, research, and action, advocating for sustainable practices while navigating the complexities of global environmental issues.

As CEO, my responsibilities encompass a spectrum of tasks. From ensuring legal compliance and financial stability to setting strategic objectives and fostering team growth, every decision is geared toward advancing our mission. Collaborating with experts, evaluating performance, and enhancing our outreach through effective communication channels are key priorities. Eventually, our aim is not only to deliver results but to amplify our impact, fostering a community of environmental stewardship and innovation.

Throw some light on the major challenges you encounter as a sustainability leader. How do you overcome the said roadblocks?

As a sustainability leader, one of the major challenges I encounter revolves around adaptability and flexibility. Plans can change unexpectedly, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, where scheduled events had to be shelved, overcoming such roadblocks requires a leader to remain resilient yet flexible. Additionally, cultural differences and varied business customs can pose challenges in communication and collaboration, understanding and respecting these differences while finding common ground is crucial. Other hurdles like late payments and personnel changes also demand proactive measures and a persistent approach to ensure smooth operations and team synergy.

In your opinion what have been the biggest ‘wins’ that you have achieved so far in your professional journey? What has been your success mantra over the years?

One of my biggest wins has been completing my doctorate while balancing a full-time job and family responsibilities. This required immense dedication and time management, but achieving the highest distinctions was a significant milestone in my career. Another major success was transitioning from paid employment to entrepreneurship, despite societal skepticism. Establishing and maintaining my company, Pendo SRL, for over a decade has been a testament to perseverance and resilience.

My success mantra revolves around determination, adaptability, and seeking support when needed. "Where there's a will, there's a way" encapsulates my approach, emphasizing resilience, continuous self-improvement, and leveraging support networks for success, and gratitude. It's about overcoming obstacles with tenacity, learning from challenges, and striving for excellence despite the odds.
