Take us through the formative years of your life. What were some key early influences in life that shaped you as an individual?
From the age of ten, I was immersed in the tourism industry on Amorgos, a Greek island where my father pioneered local accommodations. Fluent in English due to a unique arrangement with the first English tourist, I became the first English-speaking person on the island. This early exposure fostered my passion for hospitality and communication, as I enjoyed meeting new people and welcoming guests, shaping my nature and career path in the tourism industry.
Give us a glimpse of your expansive professional journey in the tourism and hospitality industry. What were some of the most crucial junctures throughout this journey?
My journey in the tourism and hospitality industry began on the Greek island of Amorgos, where I also completed elementary school before attending high school in Athens. After marrying, we immigrated to New Jersey, where I worked in a Greek community, improved my English, and earned a diploma in teaching English. I also worked at a travel agency, organizing trips and discovering my passion for travel. Upon returning to Greece, my husband and I took the risk and established the Aegialis Hotel & Spa, just when electricity infrastructure was established in the area. With hard work and passion, our project grew into a renowned establishment offering stunning views and exceptional hospitality.
"Today, our hotel stands as a renowned five-star destination in Greece, a testament to overcoming early hurdles and turning a challenging project into a resounding success"

A business leader's journey is replete with challenges. Throw some light on the major challenges you encounter in your current role. How do you overcome the said roadblocks?
Embarking on a major project on a small island presented a unique set of challenges. Initially, I faced significant bureaucratic obstacles with the tourism, archaeology, and banking departments. The island's limited appeal and low local interest made securing support particularly difficult. With a natural talent for communication, I tackled these issues head-on. I strategically invited journalists to the island, showcasing its potential, and attended travel expos in Milan, London, Scandinavian countries, and Berlin to promote both the island and the hotel. In an era before widespread internet use, these efforts required extensive correspondence and persistent outreach. Through dedication and creativity, we gradually increased visibility and interest. Today, our hotel stands as a renowned five-star destination in Greece, a testament to overcoming early hurdles and turning a challenging project into a resounding success.
In your opinion what have been the biggest ‘wins’ that you have achieved so far in your professional journey?
Among my greatest professional achievements are two major projects. Firstly, I transformed the island's visibility by inviting journalists, leading to extensive media coverage and a surge in interest in our hotel. This success was pivotal for the small island's recognition. Secondly, in 2003, I launched a cultural and tourism convention, celebrating the island's heritage. This event, held annually for 21 years, attracts international guests and media, promoting Greece, Amorgos, and our hotel. Concurrently, we established the Amorgos Film Festival, further enhancing our global presence and showcasing diverse cultures. These initiatives have significantly elevated our profile and contributed to our enduring success.
How do you foresee the global travel and hospitality industry evolving in the near future? Which industry trends will create the most significant impact on the hospitality landscape going forward?
The global travel and hospitality industry is increasingly driven by environmental consciousness. Travelers now seek to contribute positively to the environment during their vacations, often participating in activities like beach and path cleanups. In response, there is a growing emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly practices. cultural enrichment through local experiences is gaining traction. I have been involved in organizing initiatives through the Cultural Association of Amorgos Women which I established 30 years ago.
The Amorgos Gastronomy Club is my initiative, and I authored a book on Greek cuisine and Greek culinary culture. These efforts not only promote cultural heritage but also support local communities and foster environmental stewardship.
