In Sweden, the landscape of corporate leadership has seen a notable rise in the representation of women CEOs, reflecting a positive shift towards gender diversity in boardrooms. These women bring a unique blend of strategic insight, resilience, and a commitment to innovation. One such trailblazer is Marit Vaagen, whose impact extends beyond her role as the founder of Sirona Health Solutions.
As a woman CEO in Sweden, Marit exemplifies the intersection of economic expertise and a deeprooted passion for healthcare transformation. Marit's journey not only contributes to the changing narrative of women in leadership but also sets a compelling example for the next generation of female leaders in the Swedish business landscape.
Engaging in an idiosyncratic interaction with The Global Woman Leader magazine, Marit shares the imperious details of her journey as one of the influencing leaders in Sweden. Let’s delve into it.
As a leader in the hospital and healthcare industry, what key areas of expertise have you developed?
My experience is multifaceted - I have covered everything from analytics and transformation services to governments, private life sciences companies, and hospitals, and even being the CEO and owner of a primary care provider in Stockholm. Using big data analytics, I have experience with a variety of healthcare data, including medical and economic data. I am an expert in combining comprehensive financial and medical performance analytics to create a strategic viewpoint on the healthcare sector. My background includes practical evidence investigations and performance management assessments, demonstrating a deep understanding of the nuances of the field.
Could you share the motivations behind establishing Sirona Health Solutions? Additionally, what is the underlying idea behind the venture, and what are its key areas of specialization?
Establishing Sirona Health Solutions stemmed from a dual vision rooted in a passion for improving healthcare and fostering gender inclusivity. Initially, my mission was to shift the healthcare paradigm towards prevention, advocating for a proactive system over a reactive one. Fifteen years ago, this concept was relatively novel, but I was determined to champion preventive care. As we progressed, I recognized a crucial need for healthcare analytics, both financially and medically impactful.
“My ability to combine strategic knowledge & data in a way that promotes all-encompassing healthcare solutions is, i believe, my greatest strength”
The second facet of my vision aimed at creating a professional service firm that would be a magnet for women. Having experienced the challenges of gender disparity, I aspired to establish an environment at Sirona that was not only innovative in healthcare but also a welcoming and equal space for women professionals.
Leadership in healthcare often involves navigating challenges. Could you elaborate on the major challenges you have encountered and shed light on how you overcame these roadblocks?
Entering the vibrant, predominately male healthcare industry as a young professional presented unique difficulties. At McKinsey, my early focus on performance as a financial analyst set the groundwork for respect and recognition.
Overcoming obstacles required a persistent, long-term dedication, carefully coordinating industry knowledge with individual goals. The main tactics I used were a results-oriented approach, a relentless drive to surpass targets, and a strong will to bounce back from failures. These tactics helped me get over obstacles and make a lasting impression on the healthcare industry.
Reflecting on your professional journey, what do you consider to be your most significant achievements or 'biggest wins'?
Starting Sirona and swiftly transforming it into a thriving, healthy, and profitable business stands out as a monumental achievement. Being elected a partner at McKinsey after only five and a half years, especially during a time when female representation was a mere 1 percent, was another significant milestone. A touching moment occurred when the pioneering figure at McKinsey, recognized as the architect of management consulting, personally penned a letter to me, acknowledging my contributions.
Over the years, I've garnered recognition, from being nominated among up-and-coming young leaders to joining the World's Most Influential Women network. The latter is a truly inspiring community of international women leaders. Serving on the board of Telenor brought its own set of challenges and rewards. Amidst these accomplishments, what resonates most profoundly is the daring step of establishing a company and navigating its success—a journey I'm exceptionally proud of.
Over the years, what has been your guiding principle or success mantra as a business leader?
My guiding principles have revolved around strategic insights into the industry, a passion for healthcare improvement, and a commitment to integrity. My genuine passion for enhancing healthcare is a driving force, evident in every endeavor. Integral to my approach is maintaining ethical integrity—doing what's right in every situation, regardless of scale. Upholding high values ensures a foundation built on trust and transparency.
A business leader you admire: Bill Gates is an inspiring figure for his foundation's impact and significant contributions to healthcare. Sheryl Sandberg stands out as an influential leader, particularly for women, with her book 'Lean In' and her pivotal role at Facebook. And Thord Wilkne, the Swedish entrepreneur and a member of Sirona's advisory board, serves as both an inspiration and unwavering support to me.
Message for aspiring women leaders & entrepreneurs: Always take the next step, and never give up.
