Beiersdorf, a global leader in skin care products, has embarked on a groundbreaking mission with the launch of its "Women in Circularity" initiative. This innovative program aims to not only combat plastic pollution and bolster the circular economy, particularly in emerging markets but also provide support to more than 1,600 women by creating opportunities for plastic recycling and employment.
Valued at INR 990.2 million, this initiative has partnered with four distinguished organizations: Green Worms, Delterra, Recycle Up! Ghana, and TakaTaka Solutions, are strategically positioned in regions severely affected by the COVID-19 crisis.
To drive this noble cause, Beiersdorf has allocated a substantial sum of 4 million Euros from its COVID-19 Aid Program to enhance recycling infrastructure and improve the working conditions of women in these regions.
The "Women in Circularity" initiative is geared towards tackling plastic pollution and addressing socio-economic challenges, with a primary focus on Kerala, India. This initiative is set to establish material recovery and recycling facilities, thus creating gainful employment opportunities for more than 500 women residing in 20 villages.
An exceptional aspect of this initiative is the transformative effect it will have on the social status of women in these regions. Beyond employment opportunities, "Women in Circularity" is committed to providing essential support such as healthcare assistance, access to educational resources, and the establishment of a Waste Workers Welfare Fund, ensuring economic security and overall well-being within the local communities.
Jean-François Pascal, Beiersdorf's Vice President of Corporate Sustainability, envisions addressing the ever-intensifying global plastic problem, further exacerbated by the pandemic. As part of their commitment to combat this issue, Luisa Robles Vega, Beiersdorf's Sustainability Manager, underscores the ambitious plan to significantly expand plastic waste collection and recycling by an impressive 15,000 tons annually, thereby providing crucial support to female waste collectors.
CEO Jabir Karat of Green Worms emphasizes the immense significance of this initiative in empowering women involved in waste management, offering stability and secure employment opportunities as we emerge from the pandemic.
The "Women in Circularity" initiative, operational across four countries, remains resolute in its dedication to environmental sustainability, women's empowerment, and the enhancement of waste management practices.
This remarkable endeavour not only champions environmental welfare but also addresses the socio-economic progress of women, particularly in regions grappling with the aftermath of the pandemic. By fostering a circular economy and empowering women, Beiersdorf's "Women in Circularity" sets a remarkable precedent in the pursuit of global sustainability and positive social transformation.
