Australian Venture Capital Funds Pledge Transparency to Support Women Founders & Bridge Funding Gap

In a substantial move towards fostering gender equality and supporting women entrepre- neurs, major venture capital (VC) funds in Australia, including Blackbird and Airtree, have committed to providing detailed data on their invest- ments in women founders and mixed teams. The initiative, spearheaded by Alberts, Scale Investors, and Giant Leap, aims to improve transparency and address the funding gap faced by women-led startups.

Thirteen prominent VC funds, along with 40 others expressing interest, are participating in the program. The focus is to shed light on the disparity in funding for women founders, with startups led by at least one female founder receiving 63% less funding compared to all-male founding teams during the June quarter.

A five-year low in Series A deals for women-led companies has been caused by the drop in funding, underscoring the need of taking proactive measures to support female entrepreneurs in the startup ecosystem.

The goal of the VC funds is to guarantee that women entrepreneurs have more access to capital, both at early-stage accelerators and larger VC companies, by publishing information about their support for women-led businesses. Companies having at least one female founder are three times more likely to have their pitches forwarded to the fund's investment committee for assessment.

The information provided by Giant Leap supports the potential advantages of diversity in startups even more. Companies with at least one woman founder, pitching their ideas to the firm, are three times more likely to have their pitches escalated and reviewed by the fund's investment committee. This trend highlights the impact of diverse perspectives in driving innovation and generating positive social and environmental outcomes.

Moreover, the program strives to extend inclusivity beyond gender to encompass other forms of diversity, such as non-binary founders and women-only teams, thus fostering a broader culture of inclusiveness and empowerment.
