Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stated on February 14, 2024, that the large number of women vying for reserved seats in parliament reflects a big awakening among Bangladeshi women.
PM Hasina addressed a meeting of women seeking nomination from the governing Awami League for parliamentary reserve seats in Ganabhaban, emphasizing the spike in interest, with 1,553 women fighting for only 48 reserved seats.
"In witnessing 1,553 women aspire for only 48 reserved seats, we can conclude that women's awakening has occurred in Bangladesh," she went on to say.
She emphasized women's effective engagement in numerous industries, highlighting their expertise and contribution to society. Prime Minister Hasina used examples from sports and other areas to advocate against arbitrary obstacles for women.
She also cited historical antecedents, highlighting the important role of women like Bibi Khadijah in early Islam. PM Hasina stressed that Islam grants women significant rights, including those of the transgender population.
Prime Minister Hasina expressed confidence for increasing direct engagement of women in voting in the future, reaffirming Bangladesh's commitment to gender equality at all levels of society.
With 350 seats in parliament, including 50 earmarked for women, Prime Minister Hasina's words highlighted the changing landscape of women's engagement in Bangladeshi politics.
