Bangladesh's PM Shaikh Hasina forced to Resign & Flee to India

The biggest news comes in action after the Prime Minister of Bangladesh Shaikh Hasina resigned and fled from the country amid ongoing protests that happened against a quota system for government jobs. The declaration of the system led to protests and violence against the PM who has been ruling the country from past 15 years.

On August 5, 2024, her residence has been stormed by thousands of protestors, also attacking other building where the party members and their family were staying. The 76-year-old resigned from her post and took military helicopter, leaving for India along with her sister amid protests.

With over 100 dead citizens, the protests started growing when the gigantic masses of people charged while shouting slogans, pumping fists along with showing victory signs. Videos have been coming on the internet where it is clearly visible that the PM’s residence is being ambushed by people and looting household things with them and destroying everything inside the house.

General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the army chief of Bangladesh addressed the country and said that an interim government will be formed but till then, the army will be taking over the country. Vowing to launch an investigation, General Waker has promised to get into the roots of deadly crackdowns that led to this outrage against the government since close to 300 people have been killed in the protests from past month.

In a statement, the son of Shaikh Hasina, Sajeeb Wazed Joy expressed his disappointment and said, “She has turned Bangladesh around. When she took over power, it was considered a failing state. It was a poor country. Until today it was considered one of the rising tigers of Asia. She's very disappointed.”

Posting on the X handle, Ali Sabry, the Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka wrote, “We believe in the resilience and unity of the Bangladeshi nation and hope for a swift return to peace and stability. May the people of Bangladesh find the strength to overcome these challenges and emerge even stronger.”
