Chea Serey named First Cambodian female NBC Governor

In a first, His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni appointed Chea Serey as the Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, as stated to the Royal Decree signed by the Cambodian King.

Chea has become the first Cambodian woman ever to serve as the central bank’s governor in the Cambodia’s history.

The Royal Decree was signed on Saturday and it mentioned that PM Hun Sen will complete the appointment on the date of signature. bankers from across the country hailed Chea’s appointment saying she is well qualified for leading Cambodia’s banking sector.

President & Group Managing Director of Acleda Bank Plc, stated to the press that Chea not possesses great technical experience, but also has the requisite academic background in banking. She also holds potential achievements and legacies in the Cambodian banking industry—both central and private banking.

“She is the mother of digital banking and also created the disciplines of banking in our country, which means she has two babies in the banking industry,” said Channy.

“She has experience, knowledge, skills and leadership. So, the appointment is really very beneficial and strategic. She is brilliant as she is an international person because she can communicate globally, which takes our central banks and private banks to the global stage. I believe that she will further develop our sectors from the current level to the next levels,” he further added.

Channy also highlighted that Chea is the first Cambodian woman to become the governor of NBC. “However, the appointment is not only because she is a woman, but also her achievement, knowledge, skills, and experience that I already mentioned,” said Channy.

“We do not have any suggestions as actually she already has initiatives, ideas, knowledge, experience and skills in a full set to lead the sector and they have responded to what we really need such as digital payments, connectivity and electronic infrastructure in both national and international levels including cross-border transfers and payment and inter-banking,” he said.
