Tributes have flooded in for Una McGuill, the founder of Dundalk Women's Aid, who died on October 28, 2023 at the age of 67. Una McGuill, the eldest daughter of Matt and Monica McGuill of Mill Street, was honoured for her unwavering commitment to helping survivors of domestic abuse.
Una's consistent dedication to resolving domestic violence concerns was lauded by John Moloney, Chairperson of Dundalk Women's Aid. "Una sowed the seeds for work that has had a significant impact on the lives of women and children experiencing domestic abuse," John said. Una established a culture in which violence against women is not allowed by raising awareness and challenging cultural beliefs."
Ann Larkin, Services Manager at Women's Aid Dundalk, thanked Una on behalf of the women and children whose lives she has changed. Una was described by her admirers as "an amazing woman whose untiring commitment to ensuring that women and children have a safe place to go, have a listening ear, and an empowering acknowledgment of their right to live free and in peace."
Una's funeral was attended by a large crowd at the Church of the Holy Family. Una, according to Fr. Michael Murtagh, "stood up" and "coped with adversity in a very creative way." Una's legacy was further lauded by her son Steven, who characterized her as "strong, brave, and courageous" and expressed enormous satisfaction in her support for women's rights.
Una's children, Laura, Cheryl, and Steven, as well as countless grandkids, siblings, cousins, friends, and her beloved dog Buzzbee, survive her. Her unwavering attitude and dedication to the mission of Women's Aid will be remembered fondly in Dundalk.
