EABL Introduces Paid Pregnancy Loss Leave, Setting a New Standard

By: GWL Team | Wednesday, 20 September 2023

East African Breweries Limited (EABL) is forging new territory by providing up to 6.5 months of paid leave for pregnancy loss, in line with its parent firm, Diageo (initially launched the pregnancy loss leave in September of 2022 for its markets in the United Kingdom and Ireland). This innovative step raises the bar for diversity and inclusion in Kenyan businesses. Male employees with pregnant spouses are likewise entitled to up to ten days of paid leave.

The empathetic approach of EABL recognises pregnancy loss as a type of grieving, offering assistance during a difficult period. The idea stands out in a climate when corporations are cutting personnel expenditure while operating costs are growing.

Furthermore, EABL currently provides extended maternity and paternity leave, well above the legislative minimum. This action is part of a larger push in Kenya's business environment to encourage diversity, equitable pay, and a fair route to advancement.

Miscarriage affects one in every ten women worldwide, making it a serious and sometimes misunderstood issue. The new EABL standards aim to promote awareness and give assistance to impacted employees.
