With the female-led web3 brand Boss Beauties, Barbie maker Mattel introduces on-chain virtual collectibles that celebrate the variety of careers the iconic toy figure has held since its 1959 debut.
The Boss Beauties x Barbie collection showcases NFTs designed in the distinctive style of Boss Beauties, honoring Barbie's illustrious career spanning 250 professions. The initial release of the collection will feature NFTs portraying artists, astronauts, CEOs, doctors, veterinarians, pilots, and a variety of other occupations.
The collectibles, which reside on the NFT-heavy blockchain behind NBA Top Shot, cost $25 for a four-pack. They cannot be purchased with cryptocurrencies.
According to Barbie maker Mattel, this low price, combined with easy control, makes it cheaper for Barbie fans to enter Web3. Boss Beauties has long been committed to engaging the next millions of women and girls in the world of web3.
Lisa McKnight, global head of Barbie maker Mattel's Barbie and Dolls business, said in a statement: “As Barbie continues her journey into the metaverse, we are proud to enable women and collectors to explore the web3 through our virtual collections. I am proud to collaborate with Boss Beauties. The collection will be available for early access, with the official launch scheduled for May 18 in Vicon.”
The Boss Beauties will receive NFTs in the form of virtual collectible packs featuring Barbie dolls. These NFTs will have different levels of rarity and will provide access to various digital and real-life advantages. Each pack will consist of two "common" cards and one "uncommon" card. The fourth card in the pack can be of any rarity level, including "ultra rare," "extremely rare," and "exclusive."
The "Ultra Rare" NFT, which accounts for only 0.67% of the total supply, grants the owner a limited-edition Barbie "Career of the Year" doll set. Additionally, the "Exclusive" NFTs, comprising just 0.47% of the cards, offer the holder a ticket to the immersive "World of Barbie" exhibit currently taking place in Los Angeles.
The collection will offer additional undisclosed advantages, including extra physical items accessible to holders and the opportunity to engage in virtual conversations with accomplished women leaders from various professional fields. Early Access buyers will also be granted a surprise virtual collectible featuring a special career characteristic. The specifics of this collectible will be unveiled in July, coinciding with the premiere of the upcoming Barbie movie by Warner Bros., starring Margot Robbie.
This isn't the first time Barbie maker Mattel has ventured into Web3 technologies. Last summer, they introduced a range of cryptotoys and collaborated with the French fashion house Balmain to create a line of Barbie NFTs. While Barbie maker Mattel's enthusiasm for integrating blockchain-based products with its brands remains unchanged since last year, it is worth noting that the collectibles in the Boss Beauties X The Barbie series are specifically labeled as series virtual collectibles rather than NFTs, although they essentially serve the same purpose.
