FIFA threatens to blackout coverage of Women's World Cup in Europe

Gianni Infantino, the President of FIFA warned the media of Europe's top soccer nations to blackout the broadcast for this year's Women’s World Cup unless they can improve their 'disappointing' offers for the rights.

The offers of the "Big 5" European nations which are Britain, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France were rejected by the world's governing body of football because the offers they made were a 'slap in the face' the players and "all women worldwide," according to Gianni. Therefore, there will be no broadcast of the FIFA Women's World Cup in the "Big 5" European nations if their offers remain the same. The World Cup will begin on July 20 and is co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.

Gianni further said that only $1 million to $10 million has been offered by the broadcasters rather they offer $100 million to $200 million to the men's World Cup for the rights.

This is not an excuse that Women's World Cup matches will be held outside prime-time viewing hours for European markets due to the time zone difference.

According to the FIFA audit of the competition, 1.12 billion people watched the 2019 Women's World Cup in France across all media platforms.
