An annual measure of entrepreneurship, global entrepreneurship monitor (GEM) has found that a total of 8.6 percent working-age women in Scotland were running or atleast launching their new businesses in the year 2023 which in comparison to 9.8 percent men is low but close. This has been described as “statistical parity” in the report.

The researchers of the report announced a ‘landmark moment’ for the country following the study and finding that women take up nearly half of all entrepreneurs, previous year. In the year 2022, women took up 7.2 percent while men with 10.5 percent in entrepreneurship.

This particular survey has involved 2,060 adults as well as 40 experts from Scotland, having found that in 2023 1/5 of all entrepreneurs in Scotland were not white, exemplifying just a quarter of the 250,000-strong non-white population who were engaged in entrepreneurship some way or the other.

University of Edinburgh Business School’s Dr Samuel Mwaura stated, “The two major developments in 2023 are the record high rates for non-white individuals and women, reflecting a growing diversity amongst the countries business community. Effectively, of the 300,000 or so early-stage entrepreneurs setting up a business in Scotland in 2023, roughly half were women. This is a landmark moment of significant consequence for female entrepreneurship discourse and policy in this country.”
