In the lead-up to the NATO Summit held in Vilnius, Lithuania on July 11, Global Women for Peace United Against NATO, an international coalition organized by the Belgian organization Vrede (Peace) in partnership with DiEM25's "Europe for Peace" platform, has been actively engaging in various activities in Brussels to raise awareness of their opposition to the military alliance.
On July 10, 2023, supporters of DiEM25 and members of these women's groups gathered outside the European Parliament, displaying banners demanding an immediate halt to the conflict in Ukraine and expressing concerns over NATO's expansion.
The coalition also conducted seminars and gatherings, aimed at increasing awareness of their primary objectives. Highlighting their commitment to universal principles of equality, justice, and peace enshrined in the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the group advocates for the rights of women and peoples while vehemently opposing violence, exploitation, and discrimination.
Members of Global Women for Peace United Against NATO have long been striving to establish a new world order devoid of conflict. They acknowledge the role of capitalism in fueling militarism and hostilities, and seek an alternative, non-militarized approach to ensure the well-being of present and future generations and the planet itself.
"The era of imperialism and colonialism is over. The West's claims of 'moral supremacy' and unipolar dominance are no longer valid," declared the coalition in a statement. "We celebrate the establishment of a new multipolar world order based on shared decision-making, social and environmental justice, the sharing of resources and technology, and the elimination of all conventional weapons." The women originally made this statement at the Madrid Peace Summit last year, and they plan to reiterate it on the occasion of the NATO Summit in Vilnius.
With their unwavering commitment to global peace and justice, Global Women for Peace United Against NATO aims to influence policymakers and public opinion, fostering a dialogue on the need for a transformed approach to international security and advocating for the dismantling of militaristic structures.
As the NATO Summit commences in Vilnius, the voices of these women resonate globally, calling for a more inclusive and cooperative world order built upon principles of equality, justice, and a sustainable future for all.
