Hyundai Motor Co., the third-largest carmaker globally, has responded to union demands to increase gender equity by hiring female technicians for the first time in South Korean auto production. In a significant move towards promoting diversity and inclusion, the company has employed six women out of the 200 new technicians it recently hired. This marks the first time Hyundai has accepted applications from women since its establishment in 1967.

The Korea Metal Workers' Union issued a statement on July 10, 2023, acknowledging Hyundai's efforts in addressing gender imbalance in the industry. Currently, women account for only around 2 percent of South Korea's 28,000 technicians, primarily consisting of former temporary workers who have been transitioned into regular employees.

The pressure from unions and campaigners advocating for gender equality prompted Hyundai to place the job openings on its website, a milestone occurrence in the past decade. Responding to the demand, Hyundai plans to hire an additional 500 workers for the technician positions, indicating its commitment to increasing female representation in the male-dominated society of South Korea.

Hyundai's decision to hire female technicians aligns with the company's broader goals outlined in its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) policy report. The company aims to foster an inclusive working environment that empowers female employees and provides support for their career growth.

This progressive step by Hyundai not only promotes gender equity but also contributes to breaking barriers in the traditionally male-dominated automotive industry in South Korea. As other companies in the sector witness Hyundai's efforts, it is hoped that more organizations will follow suit and work towards creating a more diverse and inclusive workforce.
