In a groundbreaking move, President Joe Biden shattered the glass ceiling on July 21, 2023 by proposing Admiral Lisa Franchetti as the first woman to lead the United States Navy. Admiral Franchetti would not only become the first woman to occupy this position in the Navy's history but also the first woman selected to the esteemed Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Admiral Franchetti's remarkable military career spans back to 1985, during which she has held various crucial roles. From serving as the commander of the United States Naval Forces in Korea to being the deputy chief of naval operations for warfighting development and the director for strategy, plans, and policy of the Joint Staff, her contributions to the nation's defense have been exemplary. Currently holding the position of vice chief of naval operations, the second-highest rank in the Navy, Admiral Franchetti has also led two carrier attack groups.

Her dedication and exceptional service have earned her numerous prestigious honors and awards, including the Defence Distinguished Service Medal, the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defence Superior Service Medal (two awards), the Legion of Merit (five awards), the Meritorious Service Medal (five awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (four awards), and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (two awards).

Basil M. Russo, the national president of Italian Sons and Daughters of America (ISDA), praised Admiral Franchetti's achievements, acknowledging the significance of her nomination for Italian Americans. Russo stated, "Adm. Franchetti's contributions are incredible, and there's little I can add, as her record truly speaks for itself." ISDA, which has been celebrating notable women of Italian origin for the past 18 months, recognizes that Admiral Franchetti's appointment represents a momentous milestone for the Italian American community.

As the nomination heads to the confirmation process, it is expected that Admiral Franchetti's congressional colleagues will swiftly complete the proceedings, acknowledging her well-deserved and historic honor at the helm of the United States Navy.
