Iranian Women Break Decades-Long Ban, Allowed to Attend Live Football Games

In a historic development, the Iranian Football Federation announced on July 9, 2023 that Iranian women will now be allowed to watch live football games from stadiums. Mehdi Taj, the head of the federation, expressed that this year's premier football season in Iran will mark a significant milestone with the inclusion of women in the stadiums.

The decision to allow women into stadiums was revealed during the live broadcast of the drawing ceremony for Iran's upcoming football season, set to commence in August with a potential participation of up to 16 teams.

Since the 1979 revolution, women had been prohibited from attending sporting events in Iran, despite no official rule explicitly banning them. Influential Iranian clerics have argued that women should be shielded from the masculine ambiance and the sight of male athletes in shorts.

However, Taj announced that several stadiums in Isfahan, Kerman, and Ahvaz have been deemed "ready" to accommodate women. Notably, Tehran is not currently among the cities included in this initial decision.

This move towards gender inclusivity in Iranian sports follows a few previous instances where women were permitted to attend football matches. In August, Mes Kerman and Tehran's Esteghlal faced off, allowing women to be present. Additionally, during the 2019 World Cup qualifier between Iran and Cambodia held at Tehran's Azadi Stadium, approximately 4,000 women were granted access.

The demand for allowing women to attend matches gained significant momentum after the tragic death of Sahar Khodayari in 2019. Khodayari, a devoted football fan, set herself on fire out of fear of arrest while attempting to enter a game disguised as a man. Her tragic incident became a rallying point for the movement advocating for women's access to stadiums.

Following years of activism and perseverance, it seems that Iranian women may finally have the opportunity to enjoy live football matches in stadiums. The inclusion of women in the premier football season is a promising step towards greater gender equality in sports and society as a whole.
