JetBlue stated that Joanna Geraghty, the current chief operating officer and president, would take over as CEO on February 12, becoming the first woman to run a major U.S. airline. This shift follows the decision of the company's current CEO, Robin Hayes, to stand down and transition into a strategic advisory role.
Joanna expressed her pleasure and honour at JetBlue's disruptive effect, highlighting the airline's cherished brand, industry-leading customer experience, distinct culture, and great crewmembers. Robin, who has served as CEO, said his decision to stand down was motivated by a desire to focus on his health, admitting the toll of the role's unique demands and expectations.
Joanna takes over as JetBlue faces issues such as the impending merger with Spirit Airlines, dwindling profits amid weak domestic travel demand, and the collapse of its Northeast Alliance relationship with American Airlines. Despite these issues, the airline reported good December demand and outstanding holiday operational performance.
Joanna has worked with JetBlue for almost two decades, holding positions such as executive vice president of customer experience and director of litigation and regulatory affairs. Her appointment brings her to the small group of female CEOs in the airline business worldwide.
JetBlue's stock rose 2% on the announcement of Geraghty's historic appointment as CEO. On January 30, the airline will disclose its fourth-quarter profits.
