The Liberal Party (PL) has decided to advocate for increased assistance in finance for women small-scale and cross-border traders, only if they get elected to Parliament in the July 2024 elections. In order to enhance their contribution to family and national development, PL has made this commitment.
On July 3, 2024, PL’s pledge took place during its campaign rallies in Rusizi and Nyamasheke districts. The mentioned districts host several women small traders that also includes cross-border traders. The manifesto of PL pledges to assist the development of women, aiming to make sure that these women take min. of 30 percent decision-making positions in public institutions, private institutions along with non-governmental organisations.
One of these women who exports yogurt to neighbouring countries, Christine Niyonkuru is a resident of Rusizi. She says, “I can export between 30 and 100 bottles of yogurt to DR Congo per day. With more capital, our export volumes and income could increase. Finance from banks to women should be increased.”
Considering another statement of the Liberal Party’s Secretary General, Adrie Umuhire said, “Women in Rusizi District, for example, have become self-reliant due to empowerment initiatives. We need to continue advocating for projects and initiatives that create jobs and generate income for women.”
