The Young Women's Preparatory Network (YWPN) and Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School in Dallas, Texas, recently held a group of 25 young women for an instructive and inspirational examination of women in STEAM. Mary Kay Inc. is a global supporter of women's empowerment and education. The activities lead up to the February 11 celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.
The teenagers spent the day at Mary Kay's Richard R. Rogers Manufacturing / R&D Center (R3) in Lewisville, Texas, where they were given a tour of the cutting-edge building and educated about the various facets of STEAM-related manufacturing procedures in a complicated, international beauty corporation. After the tour, kids heard from a group of female STEAM industry professionals. Upstream innovation, brand formulation, telecommunications, market analysis, portfolio & strategy planning, and process development professionals made up the panel. In the afternoon, students participated in a mentorship lunch where they had the chance to talk about various career routes for women in STEAM sectors, personal and professional goals, and how we can better support, encourage, and equip young women who want to work in STEAM fields.
The future is STEAM, according to Dr. Lucy Gildea, chief innovation officer for product and science at Mary Kay. "Mary Kay is devoted to enabling and motivating the next generation of women to embrace their passions," she added. Women are underrepresented in the STEAM profession, but by giving young girls access to vital early educational experiences and exposure, we can close this gap and encourage more women to pursue and explore STEAM careers.
The largest network of public, all-girl college preparatory schools in the US is run by the nonprofit organization Young Women's Preparatory Network in collaboration with public education agencies throughout the state of Texas. With a track record of academic success, high school graduation rates, and college acceptance rates, YWPN schools are situated in impoverished metropolitan neighbourhoods. With the launch of the Irma Lerma Rangel Young Women's Leadership School in 2004, YWPN established the first public-private relationship with the Dallas Independent School District.
Lynn McBee, Chief Executive Officer, Young Women's Preparatory Network, said, "We are happy to have our young women participate in a day packed with important links to women in STEAM, and are appreciative to Mary Kay for this opportunity. These young ladies are intelligent, brilliant leaders of the future. They are more inspired to aim further, accomplish more, and perhaps one day uses STEAM to change the world when they are exposed to other accomplished women in STEAM areas and witness the difference they can make.
Young women who also are embracing ownership of their futures through leadership, ingenuity, and a commitment to succeed in STEAM professions are recognized and supported by Mary Kay. In the fields of math, science, technology, and engineering, women only make up approximately 28% of the workforce. The business is carrying on Mary Kay's aim to enhance the lives of all women by continuing to encourage young women in STEAM fields.
