Mexican chef-owner of Rosetta, Elena Reygadas becomes The World's Best Female Chef 2023

The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2023 presented the first of this year's pre-announced honours, naming Elena Reygadas, chef-owner of Rosetta in Mexico City, as The World's Best Female Chef 2023. Elena has established herself as one of the most significant characters in Mexican cuisine since since she won the title of Latin America's Best Female Chef in 2014.

She has just started a female-focused scholarship programme in Mexico with the objective of promoting more gender balance in kitchens. She is an ardent supporter of Mexican biodiversity and sustainable agriculture. The "Beca Elena Reygadas" scholarship is offered to Mexican students who have been admitted to culinary schools with the aim of promoting equitable opportunities and enhancing the leadership of Mexican women in the culinary field.

In the Roma neighbourhood of Mexico City, Rosetta debuted in 2010 with an attractive menu that emphasised modernising classic Mexican cuisine. It ranked No. 60 on The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2022 list and No. 37 on the list of the 50 Best Restaurants in Latin America for 2022, because to its emphasis on seasonal, local foods obtained from small farmers.

The World's 50 Best Restaurants director of content William Drew states; "It is an honour to give Elena Elena, a chef who is leading the way for future generations of female leaders in Mexico and beyond, The World's Best Female Chef award this year. We are honoured to give Elena this distinguished prize in support of her commitment to advance Mexican gastronomy via her promotion of traditional foods and indigenous biodiversity."

Elena comments on her prize by saying; "I am really thankful and honoured to have been chosen by individuals I greatly like. Cooking is a shared activity. And thus, in my opinion, this honour belonged to my team and, in a little manner, to all the Mexican women who have committed their lives to cooking for countless generations."

The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2023 awards event in Valencia, which will take place at the Les Arts opera house on June 20, will include a number of accolades, the first of which is The World's Best Female Chef 2023 award.
