The MTN Foundation has launched the second edition of the MTN Women in Digital Business Challenge, giving R1 million ($53,600) to boost South African female digital businesses. The competition seeks to assist women in growing their tech firms and making a name for themselves in the male-dominated ICT industry.
Ten women have already been chosen as finalists in the competition, which runs through December 2023, with each earning R100,000 ($5,360) in prize money for working capital and company investments. Ntumi Mokhasipe, Elizabeth Booi, Sibusisiwe Sithole, Aasiyah Adams, Evelyn Maruping, Neliswa Jilimba, Mamello Mofokeng, Mphele Yelane, Khathu Maphari, and Zandile Mboshane are among the top 10.
Despite the fact that women make up more than half of South Africa's population, female presence in the ICT sector remains disproportionately low. MTN aims to alter this by promoting female talent and emphasising their potential for success in science, technology, and business.
"We hope their success will inspire other women to start businesses or pursue tech careers," said Lesimola Selepe, Senior Manager at MTN Foundation.
Female alumni of MTN's small business accelerator programme for ICT SMMEs were eligible for the challenge. Following a tough two-day pitching session last month, 10 finalists were picked from initial applicants.
Top entrepreneurs will undergo a four-month mentorship program, receiving coaching on growth, marketing, and financial management. MTN Foundation GM Arthur Mukhuvha emphasizes the impact of the program on women-owned ICT SMMEs, focusing on sustainability and growth.
Selepe highlights women's flourishing in ICT industry, making social contributions through technology education programs. MTN aims to unlock potential through funding, mentorship, and capacity building.
