MTN Uganda, a prominent supplier of telecom and digital solutions, has launched the "MTN@25 Advancing Women Entrepreneurs" (AWE) programme in conjunction with MTN Mobile Money, American Tower Corporation, UN Women, and others. This effort seeks to increase female involvement in the technology industry, solve gender imbalances, and strengthen women-owned enterprises.
MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge stated the company's commitment to growing local spending on women entrepreneurs in the telecom industry and building an inclusive marketplace. MTN Uganda has committed $4 million (UGX 15,029,428,000) to the project.
The AWE initiative hopes to have 50 women suppliers on board by the end of the year, and 250 by 2025. Eligible female entrepreneurs are urged to apply by October 31, 2023, in a variety of sectors including IT, network services, digital services, property management, and others.
This transformational effort has received assistance from UN Women Uganda, DFCU Bank, NSSF Hi Innovators, and other partners. The initiative supports SDG 5 and is an important step toward empowering women in business and attaining gender equality.
