The National Angel Capital Organization (NACO) has launched the National Women's Initiative, a ground-breaking set of programs targeted at boosting female entrepreneurs across Canada. The program will leverage a large network of partner organizations and will be funded by the Government of Canada through the Inclusive Women's Venture Capital program, a critical component of the nation's first Women Entrepreneurship Strategy.
NACO's strategic alliances with well-established organizations dedicated to women's entrepreneurship, investment, and business will enable cross-country roundtables. These events will provide a venue for female investors and entrepreneurs to network, exchange issues, and uncover possibilities. Furthermore, the program will provide instructional resources aimed at empowering female entrepreneurs and investors, as well as share inspiring experiences from both sides of the investing spectrum.
Through the engagement of angel investors, the launch confirms NACO's position as a platform for cross-Canada communication, the promotion of best practices, and enhanced access to financing for entrepreneurs. Women currently make up 37% of Canada's angel community, according to NACO's 2023 report, a 50% rise from prior years. However, institutional racism, restricted access to essential networks, and a lack of representation in the investment community continue to be obstacles for women and minority entrepreneurs seeking to launch successful businesses in Canada.
The Minister of Small Business, the Honourable Rechie Valdez, stressed the importance of the National Women's Initiative, saying, "Supporting women in business isn't just the right thing to do—it's the smart thing to do to support our economy." Claudio Rojas, CEO of NACO, emphasized the initiative's position as a first in the Canadian angel investment scene, expressing confidence in its ability to make a significant difference in the lives and professional achievement of women entrepreneurs throughout the country.
Sonya Shorey, Interim President and CEO of Invest Ottawa, agreed, underlining the importance of diversity and the infinite potential of Canadian entrepreneurs. Invest Ottawa is happy to join NACO in its support of the National Women's Initiative, which aims to build a more competitive and inclusive entrepreneurial environment throughout the country.
