About NATO

With 30 members—28 European and 2 North American—the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, often known as the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance. The North Atlantic Treaty was put into effect by the organisation after World War II, when it was signed in Washington, D.C., on April 4, 1949. NATO is a system of collective security, and its independent member states have agreed to defend one another from outside attacks. NATO functioned as a check on the imagined Soviet Union threat during the Cold War. After the fall of the Soviet Union, the alliance persisted and has participated in military actions in South Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the Balkans.

NATO's military headquarters are close to Mons, Belgium, while the organization's main offices are in Brussels, Belgium. The combined military of all NATO nations number about 3.5 million soldiers and personnel, and the organisation has focused its NATO Response Force deployments in Eastern Europe.
