Neena Singh becomes first Indian-American Montgomery Township Mayor

In a watershed event for Montgomery Township, New Jersey, Neena Singh became the first Sikh and Indian American woman to be elected mayor. The historic event occurred during the Township Committee's reorganization meeting last week, during which Neena expressed her gratitude to fellow committee members for their unanimous support.

Neena Singh, a resident of Montgomery for 24 years, was sworn in on January 4 by Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman and praised the township for its dedication to breaking down barriers and embracing inclusive, transparent, and forward-thinking administration. Neena, a former Deputy Mayor and Township Committeewoman, stated that her key goals are public safety and health.

Neena’s commitment to public service extends beyond formal capacities, as seen by her active participation with STAND Central NJ, a grassroots non-profit focusing on voter engagement and empowerment. Congresswoman Watson Coleman lauded Singh as a remarkable leader who cares deeply about equity, economic prosperity, and the well-being of all residents.

Deputy Mayor Vincent P. Barragan expressed delight in working with a diverse workforce, while Indian-American State Senator Vin Gopal praised Singh as a strong role model for young South Asian ladies in New Jersey.
