  • The event showcased nation’s achievements, challenges, and future strategies to strengthen women’s presence in male-dominated fields

During the 69th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York, Saudi Arabia’s progress in fostering gender equity and expanding opportunities for women took centre stage. The exclusive event titled, “From Vision to Reality: Saudi Arabia’s Story of Women’s Empowerment,” highlighted nation’s decade-long transformation. It explored country’s remarkable progress, ongoing challenges, and future goals in advancing gender inclusion.

The event was graced by prominent female leaders who shared personal insights on reforms shaping women’s rights, highlighting socio-political advancements and milestones achieved under Vision 2030. Prof. Hanan Al-Ahmadi outlined key legislative reforms that have strengthened women’s presence in Saudi Arabia’s political landscape.

The number might not be as we wish. However, we focus on competency and qualification,” said Al-Ahmadi. She added: “We don’t want women’s presence in leadership to be a mere symbolic presence. Women in leadership must have impact. So, I think that’s the focus in Saudi Arabia, and that’s why we have so many distinguished leaders. And the sky is the limit.”

Vision 2030 has opened doors for women in traditionally male-dominated fields. As Al-Eisa highlighted how workforce reforms in child support and flexible work, has boosted female participation in ICT, healthcare, and energy. Women now comprise 35% of the ICT sector and lead major academic institutions.

Princess Lamia bin Majid, secretary general of Alwaleed Philanthropies, emphasized om how Saudi Arabia is actively integrating women into culture and society, aligning with Vision 2030’s focus on economic diversification and inclusive growth. Princess Lamia’s Wa’iya project has educated 12,000 women on legal rights and empowered 2,200 female lawyers.

Her ‘Craftswomanship’ initiative has trained 3,500 artisans, creating pathways to global markets and financial stability. With a presence in over 180 countries, the foundation is dedicated to fostering women’s empowerment through education, legal advocacy and financial inclusion.
