Lagos Women Run organizers announced over 8,000 registered participants, including athletes and avid runners, from 10 clubs and local elite athletes, on November 11, 2023.
Over 8,000 athletes including more than 300 professional athletes have registered for the Lagos race, according to convener Tayo Popoola. Looking at the success of previous events, she stated that this year's event will have a precise focus on women's empowerment and support in various skills.
She emphasizes the use of race as a platform to recognize and empower women in Lagos State and also make them understand to boost their trade and businesses, rather than relying on race for identifying talents. She mentioned the importance of women's contributions to the respective state.
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu has planned to make the race bigger by including cash prizes and an extension for winners. The open and veteran categories have been extended from 10 to 20, with the main winner receiving N1.5 million and the veterans being provided N500,000 respectively.
The race will commence at TBS at 7 a.m. and proceed to Nitel and Ahmadu Bello Way before reaching Teslim Balogun Stadium, with complete support from security agencies and the medical team.
The Lagos State Athletics Association's (LSAA) Technical Director, Enefiok Udo-Obong, praised the organizers for establishing a platform for women's sports participation. He stated that LSAA aims to increase female participation in athletics, acknowledging their exceptional performance in the national teams and international representation.
