On October 5, Dubai-based explorer Namira Salim will make history as the first Pakistani to travel to space on Virgin Galactic's private commercial mission. With three space passengers from the US, UK, and Pakistan, the California-based spaceflight business will launch its fourth commercial trip.
Namira, who is renowned for her daring exploits, has raised the Pakistani flag at the North and South Poles and skydived over Mount Everest. She has also won awards from the Pakistani government, the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz, and the Femina Middle East Women Award.
Namira stated, "Who knew it would take 17 years to realise this dream? I signed a contract with Virgin Galactic in 2006." In 2006, she paid $200,000 for her ticket; today, the cost is $450,000.
The spacecraft will be transported to a height of 50,000 feet by a mothership before launching into space using a special flight pattern.
Namira urged Pakistan to adopt commercial space projects in the same way that the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia have done by emphasising their impressive space accomplishments.
She also spoke about her UN-sponsored initiative called "Zero G 2030," which entails a cube satellite that sends messages of peace into orbit. The project was created in honour of her achievements to the world space sector.
