Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina emphasized her government's commitment to women's empowerment and equal rights during a ceremony commemorating Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain's 143rd birth and 91st death anniversaries. Begum Rokeya, a trailblazer in Bangalee women's education and social change, was honoured during the event, which was hosted by the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs.
Prime Minister Hasina, who addressed the gathering as the principal guest, stated that her administration has adopted comprehensive steps to empower women across many sectors, stressing economic stability as a critical component. "Women do not lag behind in any sector because of my government's initiatives," she said confidently.
Referring to Begum Rokeya's vision of women becoming judges and barristers, the Prime Minister stated that this goal has come true, with women today seizing chances in a variety of sectors. Sheikh Hasina recalled historical events, including the removal of legislative hurdles to women becoming judges and the appointment of the first female lower court judge, Nazmun Ara Sultana.
During the occasion, five renowned women were given "Begum Rokeya Padak-2023" for their outstanding efforts. Professor Khaleda Ekram (posthumous) for women's education, Dr. Halida Hanum Akhter for reproductive health advocacy, and Ronita Bala for rural development were among those honored.
The Prime Minister closed by asking the people to pray for her daughter, Saima Wazed Putul, whose birthday fell on the same day as the event. Each awardee got a gold medal, a certificate, and a cash prize of Taka 4 lakh.
