During the projections, the Japan’s house of representatives has elected a record number of women. However, they remain a minority for being less than 16% in total. NHK, a public broadcaster has projected that females have secured a win of 73 out of 465 lower house seats up for grabs (the figures will be confirmed later).

In the year 2021, the country’s general elections had some 45 women who were elected to the lower house. As per the broadcaster and other outlets, a good record of females was running during the elections. They have accounted for around a quarter of candidates.

Besides, female leaders are still lagging and are in less number in the Japan’s realm of business and politics. In ranking, women leaders ranked 118 out of 146, as mentioned in the 2024 World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap report.

Head of the organisation No Youth No Japan Momoko Nojo said, “political parties are male-oriented and not open-minded, so it's difficult to find female candidates” in Japan. Moreover, Shigeru Ishiba, the Prime Minister of Japan’s 20-strong cabinet included only 2 females.

PM added, “Many women also take on care work at home, which makes it difficult for them to be a politician.”
