Serena Williams to Join National Women's Hall of Fame

Serena Williams and Ruby Bridges, are set to be inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2024, joining a distinguished cohort that celebrates activism, scientific contributions, and athletic prowess.

The 2024 class, representative of various fields, includes Serena Williams, renowned for her remarkable achievements as a 23-time Grand Slam champion in tennis and her influence as a fashion icon. Ruby Bridges, a pivotal figure in civil rights history and the subject of Norman Rockwell’s iconic painting will also be honoured for her courageous actions at the age of six as one of the first Black students in segregated schools.

Among the esteemed inductees are Peggy McIntosh, Kimberlé Crenshaw, and Judith Plaskow, recognized for their impactful work in activism and academia. The induction will also pay homage to three exceptional women posthumously: Dr. Patricia Bath, a pioneer in laser cataract surgery; Dr. Anna Wessels Williams, known for her contributions to diphtheria treatment; and Elouise Pepion Cobell, who established the first reservation-based tribal bank.

Breaking from tradition, the induction ceremony will be nationally broadcast from New York City, diverging from the usual venue at Seneca Falls, the historic site of the inaugural Women’s Rights Convention.

Jennifer Gabriel, CEO of the National Women’s Hall of Fame, lauded the inductees, hailing their diverse achievements as inspirations for future generations of women. The 2024 class represents a spectrum of impactful figures, from sports and civil rights to scientific innovation and feminist theology, showcasing the breadth of women's contributions across various domains.

The Hall of Fame, known for its celebration of women’s accomplishments and contributions, received nominations from the public, which were meticulously reviewed by an expert selection committee. This induction stands as a testament to the enduring legacy and profound impact of these remarkable women on society and serves as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
