Sheryl Sandberg to Exit Meta Board, Becomes Adviser

By: GWL Team | Thursday, 18 January 2024

In a dramatic move, outgoing Meta Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg has announced her resignation from Meta's board of directors. Sheryl, who was instrumental in Facebook's metamorphosis into Meta, announced her decision to not run for re-election in May in a poignant Facebook post. After 14 years as COO, she remained on the board until her resignation in September 2022.

Sheryl extended appreciation to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, recognizing his innovative leadership and their long-standing cooperation. She noted that the current Meta leadership team, led by Mark, has proved the company's strength and preparation for the future. Mark responded by thanking Sandberg for her great contributions to the firm and the community.

Sheryl, who had concentrated on charitable work since leaving her executive position, devoted her time to her women's leadership nonprofit, Lean In. Notably, she participated in talks about rape and sexual assault as weapons of war, particularly in light of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

Meta achieved exceptional development under Sheryl’s leadership, with revenues increasing from $272 million in 2008 to approximately $118 billion in 2021. Despite setbacks such as a pandemic-induced advertising slowdown, Meta, aided by significant investments in artificial intelligence, recovered pace under new leadership.

Sheryl’s impact goes beyond corporate achievement; it includes advocacy for workplace reform in Silicon Valley, which influenced policy changes made by major US tech corporations on problems like as bereavement leave, paternity leave, and family planning support.
