Spain won their first FIFA Women's World Cup championship with a suspenseful 1-0 triumph against England in a thrilling final at Sydney's Stadium Australia. Olga Carmona's crucial goal in the 29th minute made the difference in a tightly contested game and ended England's World Cup hopes.

With a goal attempt from Lauren Hemp in the fifth minute, England launched an early onslaught in the much anticipated matchup. In the 16th minute, the left winger's left-footed effort rattled off the crossbar and came within inches of finding the back of the net once more. Spain quickly responded, though, and put England to the test with a deflected drive from Alba Redondo. This forced English custodian Mary Earps to make a spectacular save in the 18th minute.

Carmona proved to be the saviour Spain needed, striking the far post of the English goal with a left-footed effort from beyond the box in the 29th minute. The captain's thunderous goal, which was also the game's pivotal moment, was her third in as many international appearances. Despite England's attempts, notably Ella Toone's close call in the 43rd, Spain had a critical 1-0 lead at the break.

When Spain was given a penalty for a handball in England's defensive area in the 64th minute, the second half's dramatic developments reached their apex. However, Mary Earps' outstanding save ended Spain's dreams and rekindled England's comeback aspirations. England's offence was given a boost by substitute Lauren James, forcing Spain's custodian Cata Coll to make a pivotal stop in the 76th minute. But England failed to score from the subsequent corner, leaving them behind 1-0.

Spain's celebration as the final whistle blew painted the picture, signalling a historic turning point for Spanish women's football. On the other side, England's quest for the first Women's World Cup triumph ended in sadness. With their victory, Spain joined Germany as the only countries to have won both the men's and women's FIFA World Cups.

Spain displayed their prowess as England battled courageously in a gripping match that etched a noteworthy page in the history of women's football.
