On January 30, 2025, Sunita Williams, a NASA astronaut logged a total of 62 hours and 6 minutes of spacewalking, marking an exceptional record for a woman to spent most time in the vacuum of space.
Sunita surpassed total spacewalking time of former astronaut Peggy Whitson i.e., 60 hours and 21 minutes during a five-and-a-half-hour spacewalk alongside with her colleague Butch Wilmore.
NASA made the official announcement stating about the historic feat and mentioning about Sunita completing 9 spacewalks following the one she undertook on January 30, 2025.
The statement says, “At 10:24 am central time, this morning, Suni Williams surpassed former astronaut Peggy Whitson's aggregate record of EVA [extravehicular activity] hours...Suni records keep mounting at each passing time.”
Sunita is not just an American astronaut but a retired U.S. Navy officer who’s armed with nine spacewalks, becoming one amongst the most experienced spacewalkers. Currently, she is in space, having spent 561 days, 11 hours, 28 minutes.
Besides, Sunita was selected in NASA Group 17 in the year 1998. Currently, she holds 9 EVAs in total with 62 hours, 6 minutes as total EVA time.
Being an exceptional astronaut, she has been honoured with multiple accolades that includes Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Navy Commendation Medal; Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal; NASA Spaceflight Medal; Medal "For Merit in Space Exploration", Government of Russia (2011); Padma Bhushan, Government of India in 2008; Honorary Doctorate, Gujarat Technological University in 2013; Golden Order for Merits, Government of Slovenia in 2013; Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Vishwa Pratibha, amongst others.
