J.Jill Names Maria Martinez as New CHRO

Maria Martinez has been appointed as the new Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO) of J.Jill, Inc., a major addition to the top omnichannel retailer and lifestyle brand. Martinez assumes a major role directing the company's human resources strategy and operation, effective immediately.

Martinez's responsibilities as CHRO include personnel acquisition and retention, corporate and retail business relationships, cultural development, diversity, equality, and inclusion programs, corporate communications, and overall rewards.

M.P. Wadsworth becomes Knight Foundation's First Female CEO

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, known for its yearly contributions in journalism, arts, and technology, has appointed Maribel Perez Wadsworth as its next president and CEO, in a historic move. Maribel, a Miami native and the daughter of Cuban immigrants, will be the foundation's first female president in its 72-year existence.

Maribel, 50, a product of Coral Gables Senior High School and the University of Miami, brings to the foundation over 26 years of expertise, including her role as previous president of Gannett Media and publisher of USA Today. She will take over the foundation in January, following Alberto Ibargüen, who has directed it for the past 18 years.

Rita M. Gardner Led Melmark Joins Top Women-Led Businesses in MS

Rita M. Gardner, President and CEO of Melmark, Inc., has been named to The Women's Edge's renowned list of the Top 100 Women-Led Businesses in Massachusetts for 2023, a testimonial to her unwavering leadership. Gardner's sixth straight inclusion on the list was announced in the Globe Magazine's Women & Power edition.

Gardner oversees Melmark's roughly $110 million multi-state activities, which include renowned private special education schools, adult programs, professional development, training, and research facilities. Melmark's evidence-based programs, in particular, serve people with autism spectrum disorders, acquired brain injuries, medical fragility, and extreme demanding behaviors.

Serena Williams and Ruby Bridges, are set to be inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2024, joining a distinguished cohort that celebrates activism, scientific contributions, and athletic prowess.

The 2024 class, representative of various fields, includes Serena Williams, renowned for her remarkable achievements as a 23-time Grand Slam champion in tennis and her influence as a fashion icon. Ruby Bridges, a pivotal figure in civil rights history and the subject of Norman Rockwell’s iconic painting will also be honoured for her courageous actions at the age of six as one of the first Black students in segregated schools.

UMD Sociologist Patricia Hill Collins Wins $1 Million Berggruen Prize

Renowned sociologist Patricia Hill Collins has been honoured with the prestigious Berggruen Prize for Philosophy. It is a substantial $1 million award recognizing her groundbreaking research on the intersections of race, gender, social class, and sexuality.

The Berggruen Prize, established in 2016 by philanthropist Nicolas Berggruen, seeks to celebrate individuals who advance powerful ideas that significantly shape our world. Collins, with her focus on how these intersections create unique experiences for individuals, especially Black women, and her exploration of shared human perspectives on the human condition, perfectly embodies the spirit of this esteemed award.

Avon to Launch First Physical Store in the UK

Global beauty behemoth Avon is launching its first physical stores in Britain as part of a major push into brick-and-mortar retailing.

The group intends to launch the first wave of beauty stores in the UK in the next two months. Its representatives will franchise these stores, which will run under the Avon name.
