Scores of women in France came out on to the streets across the country to protest against far-right Marine Le Pen's National Rally. Trends indicate that the party could register a victory in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Close to 200 women's rights groups and unions conducted marches in several cities across France. The protesting women are of the view that women’s rights take a hit when far-right parties govern a country. Over 10,000 women participated in a peaceful protest in Paris as stated by the organizers.
France had enshrined the right to abortion in its constitution in March which was opposed by few National Rally lawmakers, highlighting women’s rights challenges.
Shirley Wirden, officer in charge of women's rights at the French Communist Party participated in the protest. She said, "During the debates around making abortion a constitutional right, we could well observe how the far-right deputies were very uncomfortable with the subject, they were calling for filling the cribs with French babies”.
The RN party along with its allies have been touted as the winners in the first round of French parliamentary elections which will take place in June 30.
The march was a symbolic movement that highlighted the need for stronger women’s rights.
