In a notable step toward gender equality, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) revealed that women's involvement in the UAE's private sector increased by 23.1% in 2023 compared to the previous year.
The UAE continues to promote gender balance and women's empowerment, creating an atmosphere of equal possibilities in a variety of areas. The country's legislation severely outlaws gender discrimination in the workplace, encouraging more women to enter the labour. Equal pay for same duties is an important component of human rights, with the UAE Labor Law requiring that female employees be paid the same as their male colleagues for identical employment.
The UAE Labor Law extends beyond salary equality, removing barriers for women working in hazardous industries like as mining, construction, manufacturing, energy, agriculture, and transportation. Protections against pregnancy-related termination or notice strengthen women's employment rights even more. Discrimination prevention includes not just gender, but also ethnicity, colour, country origin, and social origin.
In line with the Gender Balance Strategy 2022-2026, the UAE aims to be a worldwide model for gender balance by concentrating on economic participation, financial inclusion, well-being, quality of life, protection, and global leadership. This devotion has received worldwide recognition, with the UAE leading numerous global competitiveness metrics relating to women's empowerment.
According to sources, the UAE ranks first in the Arab world and twelfth overall in the United Nations Development Programme's "Gender Equality Index 2022". The country also dominated the Middle East and North Africa area for the third straight year in the World Bank's "Women, Business, and the Law 2023" report. The UAE is ranked first among Arab countries in the World Economic Forum's "Gender Gap Report 2022".
The UAE's attention on gender balance was demonstrated by winning the Gender Balance Index at the federal government level in 2022 for the "Federal Law on the Unified General Rules of Labour in the United Arab Emirates." This legislative proposal unites maternity and paternity leave, assures equal pay, and forbids all types of discrimination, all of which contribute to sustainable development and economic prosperity.
