UN department for Reproductive Health appeals for $1.2 billion to aid Women and Girls affected by Crisis

The UNFPA's largest-ever appeal, the 2023 Humanitarian Action Overview, includes $289 million for Afghanistan, $70 million for Ukraine, $62 million for Somalia, and $23 million for Haiti.

The organisation demands predictable and adaptable humanitarian aid to save lives and guarantee that women's and girls' needs are met as the globe grapples with several, interconnected crises.

Mounting problems, Catastrophic Effects

Global needs have shockingly increased over the past year as the number of individuals who have been forcefully displaced has surpassed 100 million for the first time in history.

Devastating droughts have caused havoc from Pakistan to the Horn of Africa, and the war in Ukraine has increased the number of people displaced globally and exacerbated food shortages, which has affected nations like Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia, and Yemen.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, northern Ethiopia, Haiti, and other places have continued to experience conflict and instability.

Offer reassurance and rekindle optimism

The UNFPA urged the international community to ensure that the vital life-saving services they require remain at the centre of the humanitarian response because these crises have had a catastrophic impact on women's and girls' health and rights.

According to the agency, "We must keep extending lifelines, restoring hope, and moving forward." Because women and girls depend on us, "we depend on the strong financial and political support of our partners."

Increasing Support

By increasing the delivery of integrated reproductive health services, UNFPA and its partners will be able to better meet the urgent needs of women, girls, and young people in crisis situations.

These services vary from emergency obstetric care and maternal health to family planning and the prevention and response to gender-based violence, including medical and psychosocial assistance.

More than 30 million women, girls, and young people received life-saving assistance from UNFPA and partners in 2022, including organisations led by women.

In 46 countries, programmes for preventing and responding to gender-based violence helped two million people, while in 29 countries, facilities supported by UNFPA helped 1.4 million expectant mothers deliver their babies safely.
