A series of capacity building programs are getting organised by UN Women in an alliance with the Makers Global in Sri Lanka. These programs have been designed with an intent towards mentoring as well as assisting young females to enter high-growth industries in specific fields that includes Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Starting in August 2024, the MakHer program is a part of a project that has been funded by the Republic of Korea in order to advance the National Action Plan of Sri Lanka’s implementation on Women, Peace and Security. The recent event of the program brough 120 undergraduate students, industry leaders and representatives from the development sector together for discussing the critical intersections between advancing young women’s aspirations in STEM careers while fostering ecosystems conducive for the economic empowerment of females.

Ramaaya Salgado, the Head of Office at UN Women Sri Lanka stated, “Women continue to be underrepresented in fields like the tech industry, which is largely recognised as one of the fastest-growing and highest-paying sectors in the world. Closing the gender gap in STEM will not only ensure that women have access to more high-skilled employment, it will also ensure economic progress and help advance the women, peace and security agenda to foster more peaceful societies. We are grateful to the Republic of Korea for their vital support in making this initiative possible.”

Furthermore, Nevindaree Premarathne, the CEO of Makers Global added, “Advancing young women in STEM is about building a future where quality education, gender equality, and economic growth thrive through innovation. With our MakHer initiative, we empower women to transform their aspirations into achievements, equipping them with the skills and confidence to lead in high-growth industries and drive sustainable development”.
