The US Embassy has introduced an initiative to empower women entrepreneurs in Belize with the launch of the inaugural Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE) Program. This eight-week program, aligned with the global U.S. State Department initiative, aims to equip women with the essential skills, knowledge, and resources to establish and expand successful businesses.
In partnership with Peacework Belize and Belizean alumni of State Department exchanges, the program is set to benefit over 30 women in Southside Belize City who are heads of their households. The program's curriculum contains a range of critical areas, including sewing and design skills, principles of entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.
US Ambassador to Belize, Michelle Kwan, expressed her enthusiasm about the collaboration and its potential outcomes. She emphasized the Academy's role in providing women with knowledge, access, and networks essential for their economic success. The Academy's hybrid approach, blending in-person and online components, offers flexibility to participants.
The AWE Program resounds with the broader context of addressing gender-based disparities in entrepreneurship. While women have demonstrated remarkable strength and innovation, they often face challenges in terms of funding and access to crucial information. The Academy aims to bridge these gaps, fostering economic growth, innovation, and gender equality.
As part of the program, participants will engage in a pitch competition where they can present their business ideas to a distinguished panel of judges. Successful graduates will receive sewing kits to bolster their newly established businesses, contributing to their journey toward economic empowerment.
AWE is a globally recognized initiative operating in over 80 countries, fostering the growth, innovation, and leadership of women entrepreneurs. The US Embassy's commitment to launching AWE in Belize underscores the remarkable potential of Belizean women in driving innovation, economic growth, and social change. By providing a platform for women to transform their aspirations into tangible achievements, the Academy envisions contributing to the prosperity of all Belizeans.
The launch of the Academy for Women Entrepreneurs in Belize is a significant step toward creating a more inclusive and equitable entrepreneurial landscape, where women can thrive and make significant contributions to their communities and the economy.
