Gender roles in Uzbekistan’s economy saw a positive change as 251,400 women have secured permanent jobs and 54,500 engaged in public works in 2024. These facts were shared at a gathering of the Republican Commission hosted at the Senate of the Oliy Majlis to discuss and carve out way for women empowerment. Issues like enhancing women’s societal contributions, gender equality and ways to work on strengthening family structures were at the core of the meeting.
Presided over by Tanzila Narbayeva, the Chairperson of the Senate of Uzbekistan, the meeting centred on the enactment of state-mandated initiatives intended to captivate female workforce with specialized competencies and enhance their fiscal engagement. Its interesting to know that 177,100 women underwent specialized vocational instructions, while 147,300 finished commercial development programs.
Funding played a huge role with 55,100 women receiving subsidies worth UZ 289bn ($22.4mn) and 206,600 women took low interest loans worth UZS 3.472 trillion ($268.7mn) to flag off their new business in more structured way. Structured to enhance vocational training and business opportunities, a new system modelled after the Kirsadak mahalla of Yangiyul district had also been introduced.
This initiative forms a component of the year 2024-2025 strategic framework, incorporating the provision of capital for women’s business projects through the Reconstruction and Development Fund. Essential steps towards commercial advancement involve 250 endorsed business projects, conceived in junction with the People’s Bank, Microcredit Bank and the Business Development Bank.
