In a surprising show of support for women veteran businesses, Dawn Halfaker's new non-profit, Continuing to Serve, presented the dramatic fundraising event "Saluting Her Service: Honouring Women Veteran Entrepreneurs." The event, held at the Military Women's Memorial, drew a distinguished audience of Washington, D.C.-area government, military, and private-sector executives.
The winner of a 'Shark Tank'-style pitch competition held earlier in the day was announced as the evening's highlight. A panel of judges heard from seven remarkable female veterans about their unique business ideas.
April Caldwell, the founder of fayVen, won the competition and received a $20,000 award to further her business goal. The first and second runners-up were Hyacinth Tucker of The Laundry Basket, LLC and Maria Brown-Spence of Hearts2Heal.
Honouring Her Service The event included a remarkable roster of speakers, including U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth, U.S. Representative Chrissy Houlahan, Shark Tank Investor Daymond John, and other notable personalities, who motivated and invigorated the participants.
Dawn Halfaker, the event's driving force, expressed her appreciation for the event's success and committed to continue assisting veteran businesses. The West Point Entrepreneur Summit, which will take place in October, will include Halfaker as a mentor and featured speaker. Continuing to Serve is clearly having a significant influence on the lives of veterans moving into business.
