On February 10, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, head of Vietnam's Permanent Mission to the United Nations, attended the annual session of the UN Women Executive Board as a newly elected member for the 2025-2027 terms. The first session of 2025 focused on enhancing operational efficiency and shaping the 2026-2029 strategic plans.
Delegates acknowledged progress in gender equality but highlighted ongoing challenges such as conflicts, humanitarian crises, violence, discrimination, climate change impacts, social injustice, and resource constraints.
The slow progress in achieving the 2030 Agenda was also a significant concern. Giang emphasized the importance of assessing achievements, learning from past efforts, and formulating timely solutions.
He called for greater female participation in science, technology, and innovation through STEM education for girls. He also advocated for a global framework to connect and support women in STEM fields.
Giang called for more efficient resource allocation in areas such as health, education, gender impact assessments, and transparent budgeting to drive progress. He emphasized the importance of targeted measures like gender quotas, leadership training, and policies supporting work-life balance to enhance women's roles in decision-making.
The ambassador highlighted Vietnam’s efforts in gender equality, including a high percentage of female lawmakers and scientists, and the country’s early adoption of a National Strategy on Gender Equality (2020-2031).
Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to working with UN Women and other board members to advance gender equality and accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The UN Women Executive Board, consisting of 41 member states, plays a key role in shaping policies and programs for gender equality and empowerment.
Vietnam was elected as a member for the 2025-2027 terms, officially assuming its role on January 1, 2025.
