WJA Marks 40 Years of Empowering Women in Jewellery

By: GWL Team | Thursday, 2 November 2023

In 1982, a group of trailblazing women in the jewellery business received an invitation that would permanently alter the landscape of their profession. In 2023, the Women's Jewelry Association (WJA) is commemorating its 40th anniversary with a spectacular Ruby Gala at New York City's Pool Room.

The WJA grew from a tiny meeting to a powerful organization with over 2,000 members and 20 chapters around the United States. They just expanded to Mexico and intend to establish a branch in Toronto. The purpose of the group is straightforward: to empower and encourage women in the traditionally male-dominated field of jewellery and timepieces.

"Our 40th anniversary is a very special and elevated event," said Susan Chandler, WJA President and Chief Merchandising Officer for Citizen Watch America. We've seen women breach the glass barrier in the jewellery business by achieving significantly higher levels of success in their professions."

The WJA has awarded over $1 million in scholarships and fellowships, mentorship, and networking opportunities throughout the years. Their efforts, such as the Jewellery Loupe project and the Women's Executive Leadership Forum, have helped women-led jewellery enterprises and encouraged female executives to network.

The forthcoming Ruby Gala will feature aerialists, urban rhythm musicians, and a harpist, as well as an auction to benefit the WJA foundation's scholarship program. The WJA is devoted to expanding its national-level programming, education, and mentorship in the next years, with an emphasis on encouraging diversity and fresh talent in the jewellery industry.
