To secure the sustainability of the world, about 180 women leaders from 25 different nations will sail to Antarctica in two ships in November. The women leaders selected for this Homeward Bound worldwide initiative are from STEMM backgrounds that are Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine, and Mathematics.

Pamela Sutton-Legaud, the CEO of Homeward Bound stated that Antarctica inspires collaboration for these leaders, it is a place to work together. Before traveling to Antarctica for the three-week journey with Homeward Bound, the participants will undergo an 11-month virtual leadership program.

The female participants come from various STEMM backgrounds from almost every continent which includes, including Australia, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Panama, Germany, and Saudi Arabia. The Group of eminent female leaders will also include an emergency physician, a shark behaviorist, and a space engineer.

Fabian Dattner who is a leadership expert had a vision in 2015 for Homeward Bound, along with two Australian co-founders, Polar Marine Ecologist Professor Mary-Anne Lea, and Dr. Justine Shaw who is a Conservation Ecologist.

This voyage has been already made successful in 2016 when 76 women and a faculty of all women traveled to Antarctica. It was also documented. International leaders who are involved in Homeward Bound include Musimbi Kanyoro, the former president and CEO of the Global Fund for Women, and Global Climate Change Leader Christiana Figueres. This is the eighth year of this initiative to take place and so far it has attracted more than 600 women from more than 80 countries.
