Today’s Global development plans are considering women empowerment a higher priority and this is strongly linked with multiple outcomes. Women empowerment is the fifth sustainable goal for 2030. As the world is still working for this goal, Scandinavian countries are the places where gender equality exists the most, while many developed countries are moving towards the goal, things are not moving so fast in many developing countries, and is extremely slow in low-income countries.
There has been many definitions given for the term ‘empowerment’. In most cases empowerment was considered as a goal that is achieved through education. However education alone cannot solve the problem, there are many women all over the world who are educated or even working but are not allowed to make decisions or spend their money. Pratley and Sandberg used economic, social and psychological dimensions to measure women empowerment. Batool measured women empowerment by factors like self-esteem, the power of decision making, control over resources and freedom of mobility.
In Nigeria there are women who have climbed the ladder of success and are free however same country has many women who are even not aware of their rights. In 2023 world bank approved $500 million for the Nigeria for Women Program Scale Up (NFWP-SU). The Federal government of Nigeria established, the Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme (GEEP) fund to provide financial assistance to market women, artisans, women cooperative societies, enterprising youths, small scale farmers, agro-allied processors and other MSME categories for small and medium businesses in Nigeria. Nigeria was also working to improve the education of girls by recruiting more female teachers, creating skill acquisition programmes for girls and women, and providing textbooks at subsidized rates.
